Tribute

Dorothy Hildreth Goodbaudy

Dorothy was born Dorothy Hildreth Wortman on October 16, 1924 to Ralph and Gladys Wortman in Huntington Park, California. She was the second of four children, with sisters Mildren and Daisy, and a brother, Ralph Jr.

Her family moved often as her father sought employment during the depression. They picked fruit, Ralph painted the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, he was a policeman, baker, and motorman on trolleys. At one time they lived in the San Jacinto Valley and she attended the San Jacinto Elementary School. Part of this time, they lived in a tent in the San Jacinto River bed – until it flooded and they had to move into a house they were able to rent.

Dorothy excelled in high school, qualifying for membership in the National Honor Society.

Prior to WWII, Ralph found employment at what became McLellan Field Army Air Corps Base in Sacramento, California, as an aircraft mechanic. They rented a house in Roseville, California. There was a small house on the property, which they rented to a young man “Ed” who was also working at McLellan Field.  Ralph and Ed rode to work together.   One morning in December, as they rode to work, Ed asked Ralph for permission to ask Dorothy to marry him. Ralph said yes, but when they arrived at work that day, Ed was told to load his toolbox in the back of a B-17 and climb in. They flew several mechanics to San Francisco where they spent the next two weeks or so unpacking machine guns, cleaning the grease out of them and installing them in airplanes to fly them to Pearl Harbor. The date? December 7, 1941. When Ed returned, Ralph had told Gladys, and Gladys had told everyone. So the conversation between Dot and Ed went something like this:

“So, I hear you want to marry me.”

“Would that be ok?”

“I suppose so”

Dorothy married Clarence Edward Goodbaudy on September 25, 1942 in her parents’ back yard rose garden.

Dorothy attended Chico State College, graduating with honors. After graduation, she obtained a position teaching elementary school in Southern California, and Ed was an auto mechanic. Dorothy changed from teaching school to being a social worker for Riverside County in 1966.

They served a full-time mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Edinburgh Scotland.

Dorothy became very interested in family history. They took several trips to research their family history.

Once she found out that she was descended from at least 4 people who came on the Mayflower, she joined the Descendants of the Mayflower Society, eventually serving as governor of the local colony.

Dot and Ed were married for 56 years before Ed received a calling to an assignment on the other side of the veil. He had to go track down all of those people from their mission who would not listen to them in this life, and show them the errors of their ways.

She has 4 children, 19 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

Mom, Grandma, Great-grandma, great-great-grandma, we will miss even more than we do now.

She loved life. She loved every member of her family. She loved our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
