Vance Quintin Cather, of Hemet for the past 12 years, entered eternal life December 13, 2014 in Palm Springs, California. The youngest of 5 children to parents Harry and Elizabeth Cather, he was born in Norfolk, Virginia and was raised in Benbrook, Texas. He graduated from Western Hills High, Class of ’81 and worked for a short time at Winn Dixie in the produce department before enlisting in the United States Navy. Vance served 20 years working as a torpedoman’s mate and as a career counselor guiding others through their military journey. He was honorably discharged September 2001.
Vance was introduced to the love of his life, Susan Cherie Dooley, “Sue”, by his older brother Kim’s wife. They married November 23, 1985. They had 2 sons together, Chris and Josh. The Cather family moved all over the country during Vance’s Navy career. He retired in 2001 in Hawaii and the family moved to San Diego for a year before settling in Hemet, California. Following his military retirement, Vance worked for Jerome’s Furniture in San Diego and for STC NetCom (cell phone tower manufacturer) as a warehouse manager while living in Hemet.
Vance is described as loud, obnoxious (in a good way), and hilarious. He was always cracking jokes, smiling, and making others smile as well. He was brutally honest (almost to a fault) with no filter or sugar coating. One great thing about Vance was you always knew where you stood with him. He was a hard worker and his sons say he would come home from working in the warehouse everyday covered in sweat. He listened to upbeat rock music like AC/DC and loved spending time in the desert off-roading on quads and ATV’s. Vance passed suddenly and will be greatly missed.
Vance is survived by his wife of 30 years, Sue; sons Chris (Summer) Cather, Josh (Danielle) Cather and Dustin Cather; his mother Betty; his brother Kim; 3 sisters Kristy, Varsi, and Tracy; mother-in-law Margaret Dooley; father-in-law Jim Dooley; brother-in-law Buzz Dooley; sister-in-law Sandra Dooley; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his father Harry Cather.
Vance’s family will receive guests for a time of visitation from 4-8PM, Monday, 12/22/2014 at the Hemet Valley Mortuary. His Life will be Celebrated at 11:30AM, Wednesday, 12/24/2014 at the Hemet Valley Mortuary with Full Military Honors at 1:45 PM at the Riverside National Cemetery.
