Tribute

Shirley was born in Tobias, Nebraska on June 1, 1931. She was the fifth and youngest child of Mary Ellen and Willard Smith. Along with her two brothers and two sisters, she spent her formative years in Tobias, later moving with her family to the Pine City area of Minnesota.

Shirley married Philip Haas on October 27, 1956 and they enjoyed 55 years together until Phil’s passing in 2011. They began their married life in Harbor City, California, relocating to Hemet in 1959. They had two daughters, Patricia and Sheela.

Shirley and Phil were dedicated members of St. John’s Lutheran Church. Both were active volunteers in the church’s various organizations. They enjoyed many road trips, hiking and camping, walking their dog(s) and home improvement projects.

Throughout the years, Shirley worked as a book-keeper, office manager, school bus driver, and nurse’s assistant. She spent many years as a volunteer for several hospice organizations and was active as a neighborhood volunteer. She had a wonderful sense of humor, was an excellent seamstress and loved jigsaw and crossword puzzles.

Shirley is survived by daughters Patricia Cox (David) and Sheela Miller (Kurt), granddaughters Alexandra Miller, Emily Cox and Gretchen Fernandez (Daniel), sister Marge Hawkinson and many nieces, nephews and friends.

She will be interred alongside her husband in a private service at Riverside National Cemetery.  If you wish to make a donation in her honor, please send it to St. John’s Lutheran Church, 26410 Columbia Street, Hemet, CA 92544 or Arbor Hospice, 25220 Hancock Avenue #100, Murrieta, CA 92562
